It looks like you have an easy space to gate your stairs if you need too. Once he gets older (I still can't believe he's crawling up stairs now...my guys were almost 9 months old before tackling the stairs) teach him to correctly go up the stairs and then go "bumpety bump" back down the stairs. We taught the boys to slide down on their tummies feet first...thus the bumpety bump. Of course now they slide down head first, butt first, hands first, walking, jumping..you name it!
